Santiago de Compostela (Old Town)
"This pilgrimage site became a symbol in the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. Destroyed by Muslims in the 10th century, it was later completely rebuilt. With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, the Old Town of Santiago is one of the world's most beautiful urban areas."
Enjoy a scenic 75-minute drive to the medieval city of Santiago de Compostela. Santiago is one of the most monumental towns in Spain, boasting a magnificent cathedral surrounded by beautiful Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings. Believed to be where Christ’s apostle St. James is buried, half a million pilgrims arrive in Santiago each year, eager to see the great shrine containing the relics of St, James.
Upon arrival at the cathedral, begin your climb up approximately 90 steps to the cathedrals’ rooftop. Make sure to have your camera ready to capture the magnificent vista that awaits you when you reach the top. During your time upon the roof, your guide will provide insight into the history of Santiago and of the cathedral as you soak in the panoramic views of this medieval city.
Enjoy a tapas lunch accompanied by local wines before having some free time to explore the old town.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over cobbled streets, and many steps. Children under the age of 14 are not permitted to participate. The interior visit of the cathedral is non-guided. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts are not allowed. During mass services, visits and photography are not permitted. This tour is not suitable for guests who suffer from vertigo.
