A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old City of Dubrovnik boasts a string of beautiful churches, monasteries, palaces, and fountains.
Stroll from the tender pier to the lower cable car station and board a restored gondola for a ride to the top of the hill. When civil war broke out in 1991, the cable car was used to transfer more than 2.5 million people out of the city to the top of Srdj Hill. Today, in perfect peace, the magnificent city of Dubrovnik nests below, posing prettily for a postcard of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque splendor.
The return cable car ride brings you to the Ploče Gate at the eastern entrance to the Old Town of Dubrovnik, near the Old Harbor. Your walking tour begins here.
You'll stroll along the Stradun -- the main street of Dubrovnik. Keep an eye out for the Dominican church and the 15th-century Rector's Palace -- the Government for the once-independent Republic of Dubrovnik (abolished by Napoleon in 1808).
Spot the cathedral, destroyed in 1667 by an earthquake and subsequently rebuilt, Sponza Palace, with its columned courtyard, the Church of Saint Blaise, and Onofriou's Fountain near the city drawbridge.
You will visit the Rupe Granary Museum, which preserves and illustrates the cultural heritage of the Dubrovnik region. An incredibly knowledgeable archaeologist provides insights into the history of the Republic from the 16th to 19th centuries.
Enjoy some free time in the Old Town to shop or explore at your own pace.
Please note: Walking is at your discretion during your free time at the top of Srdj Hill. There may be a long line at the cable car station. You may be required to walk approximately 200 yards from the bus parking area to the cable car station. Terrain includes flat, smooth, and uneven surfaces that can be slippery, with a number of steps. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Boarding the cable car requires climbing 40 steps.
