Lost to the desert for centuries, Petra is one of the most spectacular sites of antiquity. A rose-hued city carved out of solid sandstone, Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2000 years ago.
Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, Petra is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of The New Seven Wonders of the World, enchanting visitors from all corners of the globe. The area lay lost to all but nomadic Bedouins until 1812, and not until 1929 did excavations of the site began.
After lunch, continue your tour by exploring the extraordinary desert landscapes of Jordan while following the path of British adventurer TE Lawrence, and meet with a Bedouin family on this 4x4 adventure. Begin with a one-hour drive to the famous Wadi Rum, site of the 1920's Arab Revolt championed by Lawrence. Here you board a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and forge ahead to the Valley of the Moon, passing through some of the most magnificent scenery in the world. The bumps you encounter on your one-hour ride will be well rewarded with dramatic vistas of desert dunes, wind-sculpted hills and striking rock formations.
Please note:
Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough walking tracks with many steps. Not suitable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Guests should be in good physical condition. This tour has considerable walking. It’s a strenuous walk into & out of the site along a sloping path that includes natural & slippery surfaces; however, there is level walking in the actual site. Total walking distance is approx. 3-5 miles with only 2 benches along the way. Temperatures can be quite high -- easily 105° at Petra with little to no shade. While there are a limited number of carriages, camels and donkeys available at Petra, they are available on a first-come, first-served basis and their use is in no way encouraged as they are not ensured. If you take the carriage, there will be no narration during the bumpy horse carriage ride that ends at the Treasury Building. Your carriage driver will schedule a meeting time with you in front of the Treasury Building for the return ride. Expect delays - 20 minutes late is not considered late in Jordan. Guests wishing to arrange for a carriage ride should do so directly with their guide and pay the guide, not the carriage driver. Even if engaging a carriage or service animal, in order to completely view the sites, you will still need to travel on foot over uneven and sloping ground. Excursion in Wadi Rum is conducted by a 4x4 vehicle. (The vehicles are provided by a charity foundation that aims to help local Bedouin people, their vehicle condition is poor and there are no other suppliers for the 4x4 excursion).
