Welcome to Santo Domingo, the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. Embarking on a historical tour will be a captivating journey through time, exploring the cobblestone streets that reveal centuries-old architecture and walking in the footsteps of explorers that shaped Santo Domingo.
Listed as a UNESCO Colonial City, Christopher Columbus's arrival on the island in 1492 meant the arrival of the first cathedral, hospital, customs house and university in the Americas. The city was laid out on a grid pattern that became the model for almost all town planners in the New World.
After a short drive from the pier, arrive at Colonial Zone where you will begin your visit at The Battle of Santo Domingo, an immersive 4D cinema experience. It takes you into the physical and virtual world of pirate Sir Francis Drake and his dramatic invasion of the walled city of Santo Domingo. It's a virtual walk through yesteryear.
Back in 21st century, take a real-time stroll through the Old Town. Some stunning buildings – remnants of the Colonial period – still reside here. You'll pass the National Pantheon, which is the tomb of famous writers, politicians and heroes of the Republic. You’ll also walk down the famous Calle las Damas – the first cobblestone street built in the Americas – which are lined with beautiful old buildings.
Next, step inside the impressive Las Casas Reales Museum. For three centuries, the administrative offices of the Colonial Government were housed here.
Continue along to Santa María la Menor for a guided tour of the first cathedral in the Americas. Its majestic presence in the heart of the colonial city stands as a testament to the enduring European influence in the New World.
Finally, enjoy some free time for shopping before walking back to your transportation.
