Discovering the history and rum of Martinique is a captivating journey that takes you through centuries of cultural heritage, from exploring colonial site to savoring the rich and authentic flavors of locally distilled rum, offering an educational experience on this beautiful Caribbean island.
Long ago, Empress Josephine, Napoleon’s wife, called the 500-acre sugar plantation Le Domaine de La Pagerie home. This paradisiacal estate with lush gardens is both a lesson in Martinique history and an insight into the spouse of the Little Emperor. Overlooking the Caribbean, it is entirely devoted to this woman who defied the traditions of her time and left her mark on French history, providing visitors with a glimpse into the island’s colonial past while offering a serene and educational experience.
Then head to the Trois Rivières Distillery – a prestigious producer of agricole rum – in southwestern Martinique. Well known for its history and commitment to crafting high-quality spirits, the distillery delivers its product with a passion and pride. Sugarcane from local fields has been processed here since 1660. You are invited to taste the rum and decide for yourself how it stacks up.
The route back to the pier includes a panoramic drive around the Diamond Peninsula, known for its pristine beaches, clear turquoise waters, pretty coves and lovely views.
