Take this enchanting bird-watching cruise aboard the 59-foot Paikea. This boat has been adapted for maximum wildlife viewing and close proximity to birds, making it truly memorable for birding, wildlife and photography experiences.
Enjoy the comfort of a heated cabin, covered wrap-around lower decking, and a roof-top viewing deck, as well as identification guides and detailed commentary from your knowledgeable skipper.
Stewart Island is known as one of the best places in New Zealand for pelagic (ocean-going) bird watching. Today you may see giant and cape petrels, sooty shearwaters (titi), terns, skua, cormorants, the striking wandering and royal albatross, and the lesser Salvin's, shy, and Buller's mollymawks.
Three of Stewart Island's penguin species -- the Fiordland crested penguin (seasonal), the little blue penguin, and the endangered yellow-eyed penguin are also sometimes spotted here.
Enjoy light refreshments as you cruise the bays, keeping an eye out for bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and sea lions.
Return to Golden Bay and to the ship.
Please note:
Participants must be able to manage steep steps and a wide step over to (dis)embark the boat unaided. Minimum age is 10 years. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Antarctic winds and sudden showers can make for cool temperatures on Stewart Island, regardless of the season.
