Breathtaking views of Mt Fuji and a visit to a serene mountaintop shrine provide an awe-inspiring atmosphere of spiritual tranquility.
Nihondaira is one of Japan's Top 100 sightseeing spots. At an elevation of 1,000 feet, this hilly area is designated a National Nature Park. Within its boundaries, trees and fields seasonally yield a rich variety of plums, cherry blossoms, tea and mikan tangerines. From Nihondaira, take the ropeway (cable car) up to the secluded Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. The shrine houses the grave of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is based on the Shinto style of shrine architecture and is an important cultural asset.
Continue to Miho no Matsubara, located in Shizuoka city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The view of Mt Fuji with the sea and green pines in the foreground creates a significant tourist attraction. In the past, historical Ukiyo-e (sketch) artists used this spot to compose pictures of Mt Fuji. Nowadays, this is absolutely the iconic, must-see view of the mountain.
