Day 1 (D) Ho Chi Minh City - Cai Be
Sixty miles from Ho Chi Minh City, Cai Be town is a beautiful and interesting place showcasing local daily life on the Mekong Delta. Life on the river is quite relaxed and comfortable. Most people live on agricultural small-holdings nearby, planting rice and fruit trees. The river provides fish, shrimps and fertile soil for planting fruit trees.
A two-hour drive from the port brings you to the Mekong Riverside Boutique Resort, located on the banks of the river. Visit a typical vegetable and fruit garden, with many kinds of trees planted at the resort. Spend your afternoon at the swimming pool, kayaking on the lake, fishing, or biking to explore the organic vegetable garden.
In the evening, enjoy a sunset cocktail and a cooking class featuring spring rolls.
Tonight's dinner is accompanied by a performance of Mekong melodies and opera.
Hotel: Mekong Riverside Boutique Resort (or similar).
Day 2 (B/L) Cai Be - Ho Chi Minh City
Enjoy breakfast at the resort, followed by a river cruise on the Mekong River and some small canals leading to the villages of Tan Phong Island. Leave the boat for a walk on the island to visit them. Most of the local people living in these canalside villages either sell or trade items from their gardens to make a living. Walk along the path and stop to visit some typical farmers' houses.
You may want to enjoy a taste of local fruit and chat with the owners about life here. You can also visit the candy workshop where coconut, rice paper, and popcorn are produced. You may have a chance to sample some candy.
Cruise back to the resort, check out and enjoy a lunch of local specialties. Then, you'll head back to Ho Chi Minh City and reboard your ship.
Please note:
Travel time is approximately two hours each way. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. The "Floating Market" in Cai Be is where the trade boats of farmers gather to sell their farm products. It is not a large floating market like those in Thailand. On some occasions, the trader boats may not be present. Due to the change of tides, the cruise might take place in the small canals or on the Mekong River only.
