Guests will be met by an English-speaking guide at the port and will board their awaiting coach to commence their six hour tour of Grand Bassam. Enjoy the view from your coach on this leisurely ride to the city of Grand Bassam, an example of a late 19th-century colonial town, located approximately 1-hour east of Abidjan. It is a historic town located on the coast of Côte d'Ivoire. This charming town was once the colonial capital of the country and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We'll start our tour with a visit to the Cathédral du Sacré Coeur, a stunning example of colonial-era architecture. Built in the early 1900s, this beautiful cathedral features intricate carvings and stained glass windows and is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of Grand Bassam.
Next, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, where you'll be able to sample some of the best local cuisine, including fresh seafood and traditional dishes whilst taking in the breathtaking views of the ocean.
After lunch, we will also visit other sites in the area including the chief’s palace and the Costume Museum, where you can learn more about the rich culture and traditions of Côte d'Ivoire. The museum houses an impressive collection of costumes and other cultural artifacts and is a great place to learn more about the history and heritage of the region.
Your tour concludes with the drive back to the port in Abidjan. At the end of the tour, you'll have a better understanding of the history and culture of Colonial Grand Bassam and will have had a chance to experience some of the town's most interesting sights and attractions.
Please note:
Photographing military or government installations is not allowed in Ivory Coast. The level of guide experience varies in Abidjan due the remoteness of its location. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up. Your guide will likely have a very strong Ivorian accent. Transportation is basic and falls well short of the standard you will find in many other ports. Participants should be in good physical condition; please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the weather is very hot. Wear comfortable walking shoes. This tour is available to wheelchair guests traveling with a collapsible wheelchair, and who are able to make their own way on and off the coach with a companion to assist. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring bottled water and a hat and wear biodegradable sunscreen. Leave all valuables in a safe on board the ship. Bring local currency (euros), as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Should you wish to purchase souvenirs or other items, it is recommended to carry small denominations of currency (USD or Euros). For your convenience, smaller bills can be exchanged at Guest Services, located in the Seabourn Square on Deck 7. Please note that this service is limited.
