Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau to view many of the city's highlights.
A panoramic drive takes you out to the Mendenhall Valley -- home of the mighty Mendenhall Glacier. Your guide points out many of the attractions in the glacier area before you are set loose for 1.75 hours of free time. The area boasts several self-guided trails showcasing the role the glacier had in carving the landscape. Each trail offers a different view of the glacier through trees or along the shores of Mendenhall Lake. The Nugget Falls Trail leads to the base of a long, glacier-fed waterfall and offers the closest views of Mendenhall Glacier. Meander through the Tongass National Forest on the Moraine Ecology Trail. The Steep Creek Trail offers multiple views of wild sockeye salmon during the mid- to late-summer months.
Scenic Photo Point and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center are well worth a visit. Take time to watch the short film about the glacier and the 37 other glaciers that make up the colossal Juneau Ice Field.
Please note: This tour operates under a Special Use Permit issued by the US Forest Service. Due to occasional bear activity, food consumption is prohibited in the Mendenhall Glacier area.
