Castle Leod is the home of the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie, the Earl of Cromarty, whose family has lived here for 500 years. It is one of the few castles in Scotland to be continuously occupied by the original family and it very much remains a family home today.
In a magnificent setting beneath Ben Wyvi, just outside the Victorian spa town of Strathpeffer, Castle Leod's parkland boasts some of the finest trees in Scotland. Its stars include the largest tree in the UK, a Wellingtonia, and a Spanish chestnut planted for a visit by Mary of Guise in 1550. This is the earliest-known planting date of any tree in Britain.
Explore the castle on a private tour to appreciate its lived-in atmosphere, its fine collection of portraits, maps and furniture, and the Mackenzie Room situated in the old kitchen. The main part of the 17th-century castle retains the distinct, homey charm and historical ambience you would expect of the seat of such an important Scottish clan.
Enjoy a dram of fine malt whiskey afterward.
Please note: Dress warmly in layered clothing; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, gravel, and many steps.
