Leaving the fishing port of Oban, a panoramic drive over the pink granite roads of Argyll takes you to the mouth of Loch Etive at Connel. Then, skirt the loch before turning inland to the Pass of Brander. Watch for the ruined 13th-century Kilchurn Castle on your way toward the village of Inveraray.
As you approach, you'll see Inveraray in its stunning lochside setting. This charming village features dignified Georgian houses and is a fine example of a classic 18th-century planned village. It is a Royal Burgh, constructed in its entirety by the 3rd Duke of Argyll, whose elegant castle lies at its edge.
Inveraray Castle is still the Campbell (Argyll) family home. Built in the 18th century, this neo-Gothic building is one of the great bastions of Scotland's National Heritage and is among the earliest examples of Gothic revival architecture in Britain. Its fairytale exterior matches the grandeur of its gracious interior, which reflects the many fascinating tastes of the Argyll family through the years. See a fine collection of family pictures and superb tapestries set in painted rooms of outstanding beauty. A real highlight is the magnificent Armoury Hall.
