Imposing grandly over the city of Nafplion, the first capital of the Hellenic Republic, the massive fortified area known as the Palamidi is perched on a crag over 700 feet high. Palamidi has commanding views of the town, the harbor and the Argive Plain. It consists of three self-contained castles linked by vaults, corridors and secret passages. The city's symbol, the Lion of St. Mark, appears over the entrances -- a reminder of its Venetian origin.
You will enjoy a guided tour and some free time to enjoy the magnificent sweeping views that surround you before descending by coach to the town of Nafplion and the Archaeological museum. The Archaeological Museum is situated in an imposing stone-built Venetian structure which covers and encases the central Syntagma Square on its west side. It was first built in 1713, during the second reign of the Venetians under the Naval Proveditore Augustine Sagredo, to be used as the navy's depository. It is widely acknowledged as being one of the best well-preserved Venetian structures in all of Greece. The permanent exhibition spreads along two halls of the same facade, within the building's two floors and is then historically divided into several themes, from the remotest pre-historical exhibit to the period of antiquity. The museum demonstrates the mark of every civilization setting foot in the region as you enjoy a guided tour of the museum, followed by a leisurely stroll through the old quarter of the town.
