You'll learn about the historical importance of codfish in Portugal. The Cod Museum is a space where one of the most epic stories of Portugal is told -- the discovery of Newfoundland and the adventure in the icy seas by fishing for cod. You can even experience how hard it is to be a cod fisherman in the "TerraNova" freezing waters.
The museum presents the various methods of preserving and preparing cod, highlighting the different ways of cooking and savoring it. From the famous Bacalhau à Brás to Bacalhau com Natas, you will discover the wide variety of delicious dishes that can be created with cod. If you ask the Portuguese how many ways there are to cook cod, the answer will be: "365 ways - a different recipe for each day of the year"!
In addition to the culinary aspect, the Cod Museum also delves into the cultural significance of codfish in Portuguese traditions and folklore. You'll learn about the rituals and customs associated with codfish, such as the traditional Christmas Eve feast where codfish takes center stage.
A visit to the Cod Museum in Lisbon offers a unique experience that allows you to deepen your understanding and appreciation of the cultural and culinary importance of codfish in Portuguese society.
And of course, after our visit, time now to taste this delicacy! We are heading now to a local restaurant in Lisbon Downtown to taste the Bacalhau in the most Portuguese way: the Pastel de Bacalhau, a deep dried codfish cake, accompanied by a cool "imperial" beer served in a tall glass, or "bica", the Portuguese espresso.
As you are in Lisbon's heart of the vibrant "Baixa" downtown, feel free to wander in the charming streets, full of history, lively colors, cafés, and historical shops, where you can indulge in delicious Portuguese cuisine and shop for unique souvenirs.
