Medina of Marrakesh
Founded in 1070–72 by the Almoravids, Marrakesh remained a political, economic, and cultural centre for a long period. Its influence was felt throughout the western Muslim world, from North Africa to Andalusia. It has several impressive monuments dating from that period: the Koutoubiya Mosque, the Kasbah, the battlements, monumental doors, gardens, etc. Later architectural jewels include the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, several great residences and Place Jamaâ El Fna, a veritable open-air theatre., founded almost a thousand years ago, nestles at the foot of Morocco's mighty Atlas Mountains. Set off by comfortable, air-conditioned motorcoach for the 160-mile, with a rest stop en route. Marrakech, founded almost a thousand years ago, nestles at the foot of Morocco's mighty Atlas Mountains. Set off by comfortable, air-conditioned motorcoach for the 160-mile panoramic drive, with a rest stop en route.
Once in Marrakech, you will pass the Koutoubia Minaret -- a 12th-century Moorish monument. Visit the Bahia Palace to see the rooms that once housed the Sultan's harem.
You will also stop at the Medersa Ben Youssef, once was a Koran school. This educational institute, nestled in the heart of Marrakech, is a place where time seems to have stood still. As you walk through its corridors, you cannot help but feel a sense of awe at the intricate detailing on the walls, the beautifully carved cedar wood, and the stunning zellige tilework. This is a place that fosters contemplation, study, and an appreciation for the beauty of Islamic architecture. It is a place of prayer for Muslims and a place of learning for students of theology, so it is a testimony to Islamic culture and religion and to the richness of the talents of Moroccan craftsmen.
Lunch is served at a luxury venue before you head to Jemaa al-Fnaa Square to mingle with soothsayers, acrobats, snake charmers and water-sellers.
If time permits, you will have free time to explore and stroll on your own at the Marrakech souk (market) before the return journey to Casablanca.
