Explore two culturally and historically significant cities on today’s driving tour – Santo Tomás de Castilla and Puerto Barrios. As you drive through these cities, you’ll be amazed by the colorful facades of the buildings, bustling markets, and rich history that will leave you amazed long after the tour is over.
Your journey begins at the pier, where your knowledgeable and friendly guide greets you. From here you leave the port, and travel through the main streets of Santo Tomás de Castilla. This unveils a vibrant panorama where the energy of the local markets, architecture and maritime activity of the port create a dynamic and lively atmosphere. Established as a port in the late 19th century, Santo Tomás de Castilla has played a crucial role in trade, serving as a modern gateway to the Atlantic, providing a vital link between Guatemala and the global maritime network.
Next, enjoy a short panoramic drive along the seashore, passing the Naval Base as well as the Belgian Cemetery, where Belgian pioneers from the 19th century are buried.
You're headed to Puerto Barrios, capital of the Izabal County. With a history dating back to the 18th century, Puerto Barrios retains a frontier-town atmosphere. Here, locals and foreigners alike once fought to reap the benefits of the banana, coffee and sugar trades. Even today, Puerto Barrios is one of the most important commercial ports in Guatemala. It offers a blend of vibrant local culture, lively markets, and picturesque coastal views.
Continue along for a visit to the Amatique Bay Resort, where you will enjoy refreshments before heading off to make the most of some free time to shop for local handicrafts.
Re-join the coach and return to the ship.
