Welcome to the Nature Isle of the Caribbean. Today you’ll enjoy a leisurely panoramic drive through the beautiful forests and plantations of Dominica – a landscape of majestic mountain peaks carpeted in rich rain forest.
From an elevation of 400 feet, the viewpoint on Morne Bruce offers you a panoramic view of the city of Roseau and its environs – an ideal photo opportunity. The hill was named after British Royal Engineer, James Bruce, designer of all the fortifications on the island. With its steep slopes on three sides, Morne Bruce provided a natural sentry post for the protection of Roseau at a time when the city was a British garrison for troops defending Dominica against the French.
Continue on your adventure to the 20-acre, beauty-packed gem known as the Botanic Gardens of Roseau. You will see Dominica's National Bird (the Sisserou parrot) and some of the island's tallest trees. Hurricane Maria has altered the gardens to her liking, and it's not hard to spot Hurricane David's signature -- the twisted remains of a large bus crushed beneath a massive baobab tree. Nonetheless, the gardens are steadily recovering, and your patronage is greatly appreciated by the Dominican people.
Proceed to at Zeb Zepis Bistro in Pond Case for refreshments and a restroom break before continuing your scenic tour to the Pond Casse roundabout and down the Layou Valley, named after Dominica's longest and largest river. This picturesque haven, surrounded by undulating hills and adorned with vibrant floral, is where the Layou River meanders.
Along the way, travel through some of the island’s most famous citrus and banana plantations. You’ll also experience the beauty of the scenic coastline of Dominica as you pass through the coastal fishing villages of Mahaut and Massacre. Finally, you’ll continue through the Canefield Estate on your way back to the ship in Roseau.
