Meander through Charlottetown at a leisurely walking pace to admire five of its glorious churches, ranging from the oldest to one said to be haunted by phantom bell-ringers.
Trinity United Church opened in 1864, shortly after the convention that led to the country's confederation. The town's oldest church in continuous use, Trinity accommodates 1,000 worshippers and is known for its magnificent stained-glass window which you will admire from outside only.
First on the agenda is St Dunstan's Basilica, a National Historic Site of Canada whose soaring spires are recognized as Charlottetown's most visible landmarks.
Drop by St James Presbyterian Church, locally known as the Kirk. Here, three ghostly women ring the church bells -- so factual that this 19th-century legend has been commemorated on postage stamps.
St Peter's Anglican Cathedral is just down the street from the Kirk. Designated as a High Anglican church, it features a unique Rood Screen and Chancel not seen in many churches.
Before returning to the pier, you'll see All Souls Chapel -- a National Historic Site built of Prince Edward Island rust-red sandstone and featuring religious paintings by renowned island artist Robert Harris.
