Join a passionate bird-loving guide on a tour of Ulva Island (Te Wharawhara) -- the world's southernmost open bird sanctuary.
Take a very short mini-ferry ride across the narrow channel and set off on a guided walk. The route combines native podocarp forest, picturesque sandy beaches and rocky outcroppings along the 2.8-mile (4.5-km) easy walking track.
Predator-free since 1997, Ulva Island provides a habitat where rare plants and endangered, endemic birds can thrive in a completely natural, uncaged environment.
This is your opportunity to spot the Stewart Island robin, rifleman, kaka parrot, red-crowned parakeet, weka, wood pigeon, kakariki, saddleback, mohua (yellowhead) and -- if you're lucky -- the Stewart Island brown kiwi (tokoeka). The birds are very tame, and although you are not allowed to touch them, they don't always follow the rules and they may try to touch you.
Return to Stewart Island by the same mini-ferry across the channel.
Please note:
Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, leaves, roots, rocks, sand, and steps.
