Explore village-like, historical Nelson -- New Zealand's second-oldest city and its vibrant cultural capital.
Set out on a gentle walk along the banks of the Maitai River, lined with sculptures and native trees. At the tranquil Queens Gardens, you'll find a classical Victorian ornamental park.
Step inside the Suter Gallery, gifted to the people of Nelson by Bishop Suter. The artwork here changes constantly but is always thought-provoking.
Adjacent Albion Square is home to the original Provincial Government buildings.
Wander along Alton Street, past the heritage-protected Nelson Central School, and follow Brook Stream (Nelson's original water source) past beautiful timber homes. Italianate-design Melrose House is one of many large wooden houses built in the early years of the settlement. Relax here over a cup of tea or coffee.
Up Trafalgar Street, you will find the austere Christ Church Cathedral, which is integrated into both Maori and European history.
Trace the edge of the original Nelson shoreline and wander past the cottages of South Street -- home to some of the region's earliest settlers.
Your tour ends at the Nelson Visitor Center, and a coach transfer returns you to the ship.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
