Set off on an ecoadventure to discover the geologic history of the region.
Begin by venturing more than 350 feet underground at the Akiyoshido Cave, one of the world's largest limestone caves. With millions of years of history, there are so many highlights to discover as you traverse this fascinating cave system. Watch for the Hundred Dishes, an accumulation of limestone that looks like more than 500 plates stacked on one another, and the massive Golden Pillar, a stalactite pillar 50 feet high and 13 feet in diameter. The journey through the cave is on well-lit and maintained paths and will take about an hour. Don’t forget a light jacket as the temperature in the cave is a pleasant 62°F throughout the year. On this tour, a local geo guide will give you explanations along the way.
After exploring the cave, your adventure continues above ground at Akiyoshidai Plateau, a quasi-national park and one of the country’s largest karst tablelands. Starting as a coral reef at the bottom of the sea some 300 million years ago, the sea receded, and time eroded the coral into the fascinating landscape you see today. Enjoy a short walk around the park, admiring the spectacular power of nature in this unique site.
Then, enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.
Your last stop is photo stop at Akama Shrine, a captivating historical and cultural site with a rich history and stunning architecture. The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Antoku, who tragically perished in the Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185, a pivotal event in Japanese history that marked the end of the Genpei War. This historical significance makes the shrine an important destination for those interested in Japan’s medieval history and the dramatic tales of the Genpei War.
The architectural beauty of Akama Shrine is another highlight, with its striking vermilion buildings that stand out vividly against the natural backdrop. The main hall, designed in the unique Ryugu-zukuri style, is reminiscent of an undersea palace, adding a sense of enchantment and cultural depth to the shrine.
After your adventure, enjoy a scenic drive back to the pier.
