This full-day excursion offers an in-depth foray into the Mekong River Delta, home to more than 25 million people. Considered one of the great rivers of the world, the Mekong flows 2,790 miles to the South China Sea. In Vietnam, the rich river delta is a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies, fields of sugarcane, and orchards of bananas, coconuts and mangos. Today, allow yourself to be amazed by nature and the ingenuity of the Vietnamese people.
You'll drive two hours by van past farming communities before arriving at one of the river's nine branches -- My Tho. Stretch your legs before boarding a longboat, covered overhead and open on the sides. Sit back and relax as you cruise among the Mekong River's natural greenery, villages, and homes fronting the waterway.
You'll pause at Thoi Son village to visit a local farmer's house. Stroll through a garden of flowers and fruit trees, and enjoy the local fruit and tea while mingling with your host and the family.
At a workshop where coconut candy is made, rice or corn is popped in a huge iron vat filled with blackened sand and sweetened with honey, sugar and peanuts. It is a delicious treat.
Take a local sampan (boat) along the small canal that bisects the island before returning to the longboat and heading to a Mekong restaurant for lunch.
Visit Vinh Trang Pagoda afterward and head back to Ho Chi Minh City via the same route.
Please note:
Travel time to the Mekong Delta is approximately 1.5 - 2 hours each way. Traffic can be unpredictable; your patience is greatly appreciated if a delay extends the tour duration.
