Not far from the pier, visit the Kushiro City Museum to learn about Hokkaido's natural environment, history, Kushiro's primary industries, and Ainu culture. See 4,100 specimens and materials, dioramas, videos, and a mammoth skeleton. The museum's distinctive building was designed by Kiko Mozuna -- an architect from Kushiro.
You will also visit Kushiro Crane Natural Park to admire the coastal scenery and the lush wetlands. If you're lucky, you'll spot the tancho-zuru -- the Japanese red-crested crane. This iconic bird is a Special Natural Living Treasure, strikingly beautiful and, thankfully, recovering nicely from near-extinction. They are given free rein in this nature park that is entirely dedicated to their preservation.
