En route to Hoi An, you will drive through Da Nang city and past the famous My Khe Beach. You’ll see how the beach got its name, with the towering marble cliffs framing the landscape of pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters.
Along the way you’ll stop at Tra Que Vegetable Village — a charming village on the edge of Hoi An named for the sweet vegetables that spice up the everyday meals of the Hoi An people. Follow your guide on an informative walk through the herb gardens, as the culture, history and herbal remedies of the many herbs grown here rub off on you.
Next, visit a local market to learn how local fruits and vegetables grow. Head to Ms.Vy’s Market Restaurant via the main streets of Hoi An’s Old Town. Among the many live food counters in this unique, first-of-its-kind interactive dining venue in Vietnam, see, smell, hear, taste, touch and interact with many different food preparation processes. Try samples from ten different food counters including banh mi, dumplings, pickles, exotic and wonderful foods, Vietnam’s rationing foods (in place for 45 years), sweet treats and more.
Rice paper is made from ground rice and water, laid out to dry on bamboo and then later roasted for rice crackers to eat with Hoi An chili sauce. See salads and various shapes and sizes of rice noodles. Experience the famous local Cao Lau noodle dish — the noodles are rolled out by hand and cut in the traditional way with a long knife and then steamed over an open fire.
Participate at the street food counters—cutting noodles, making rice paper and wontons, using the bun noodle machine and more. Your cooking lesson runs about two hours. The tutors first demonstrate each dish and then you’ll prepare it yourself. After the lesson, sit down to eat what you’ve cooked. Take home a copy of the recipes so you can make these dishes and reflect back on the memories.
