A one-hour drive from the pier takes you through the small township of Klungkung to the ancient courthouse at Kerta Gosa. This historical complex was built at the end of the 17th century and was largely destroyed during the Dutch colonial conquest in 1908. Today, the basic remains of the palace are the Court of Justice, the Courthouse Pavilion and the main gate that bears the date Saka 1622 (AD 1700). Within the old palace compound, you'll also find a floating pavilion, added in the 1940s.
Proceed to the Penglipuran traditional village, where life has barely changed in more than a century and what's on offer is a fascinating local insight.
Continue your scenic drive through villages, lush green vegetation, and bamboo plantations to Kintamani, where you can enjoy lunch overlooking Mount Batur. Batur is an active volcano and its beauty is significantly enhanced by the picturesque Lake Batur.
After lunch, you'll drive down the hill to Tampak Siring -- a popular district featuring the Presidential Palace built in 1957. En route, you'll stop at coffee plantation and visit the Tirta Empul Temple, where you will see a holy spring in the temple courtyard, used by local people for healing.
