Located 40 km above the Arctic Circle and the second largest town in Greenland with approx. 5500 residents, Sisimuit is a metropolis by Greenland standards and offers visitors an array of opportunities. Sisimuit residents are very proud of their heritage and their town so your local guide will be thrilled to tell you the history of the area but also some little known facts that only locals will know.
On your walking tour, you will pass through the old town with its beautiful colonial houses, the heart of town, the meat market, the cultural center, and the Nalunnguarfik Lake from which all winter activities start. A few Greenlandic huskies can sometimes be seen nearby.
After a short walk from the pier, arrive at the old town areal where you will have an opportunity to sample some of the specialties favored by the Greenlanders. Don’t miss the musk ox, dried cod, fresh shrimp, and seal blubber.
Please note:
Wherever Included Experience tours are offered, guests are allowed to participate in only one included experience per call unless otherwise specified in the tour description. The Expedition Team will advise your booked included experience departure time onboard and will try to accommodate your booked optional excursions or optional expeditions accordingly. If a timing conflict occurs guests should anticipate to participate on their booked optional experience or optional expedition and forgo the included experience. Entrance to the museum is included in this tour (it is not guided)- 1 hour additional is recommended for your independent visit and it takes approximately 15 minutes to walk back to the harbor. Participants must negotiate stairs and/or uneven surfaces and is therefore not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Sisimiut is very steep and hilly, especially from pier to town. Bring insect repellent; wear sunscreen. Dress in layers and wear comfortable walking shoes. The level of guide experience varies due to the remoteness of the location. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
