Begin your day with a panoramic drive through Andoany (formerly Hell-Ville) -- the colonial capital of Nosy Be. The town's curious name comes from Louis de Hell, 19th-century French admiral and Governor of nearby Réunion Island. As you roll through town, you'll see the crowded marketplace -- a noisy and colorful hub of Sakalava life.
Heading out into the verdant countryside, you'll pass many Malagasy villages and plantations. Your guide will point out ylang ylang trees, whose flowers yield fragrant oil that is used in the making of perfume.
Stop in Dzamanzar, the island's second-largest town, where you may want to photograph the unusual cyclone-proof houses that resemble cement igloos.
Enjoy the scenery as you head toward Mont Passot to see the Amparihibe Crater Lake, surrounded by lush greenery and plantations.
Then, head to Andilana Beach, where a snack and beverage are served at a local restaurant. A Sakalava folksong and -dance group will entertain you. You will have the opportunity to swim in the refreshing waters.
Back in Hell-Ville, make the most of some free time to explore the handicrafts market and perhaps pick up a souvenir to remind you of your visit.
Please note:
