Board a bus and travel through the Tlingit village of Hoonah en route to the remote bush of the Spasski River Valley. Watch for bald eagles, woodpeckers, Sitka black-tail deer and Alaska coastal brown bears along the road.
You're here to explore the wilds in search of the spectacular wildlife that inhabits these forested lands.. Once you arrive at the Spasski River Valley, your guide will lead you down a gravel path, across a boardwalk over the delicate muskeg and to viewing platforms to see the river itself. (S)he will describe and illuminate the rainforest ecology that supports the island's 4,000+ massive brown bears. You may be lucky enough to spot some today.
Please note: Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Minimum age is 8 years. Bring binoculars. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress warmly in layered clothing with gloves, a scarf, and a hat; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Weather conditions in southeast Alaska can change suddenly. Walking distance is roughly 800 yards. Terrain includes boardwalks, gravel paths and some uneven surfaces.
