Depart the pier in Santarém, driving for 40 miles on Route 163. This is the Santarém-Cuiabá Highway -- the only way to reach southern Brazil by road.
Your destination is the Tapajós National Forest -- a section of the Brazilian Amazon that is a significant resource of tropical hardwoods. The Tapajós National Forest covers an area of 1,482,660 acres and is protected by federal law.
Take a forest walk lasting about two hours -- ideal for those interested in the primary forest flora. Jungle men will accompany you to help identify many different species of trees, including Brazil nut and rubber trees.
Notes:
Minimum age is 12 years. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Wear light clothing -- preferably trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat, and biodegradable sunscreen. Bring insect repellent. Bring binoculars. Not advisable for guests with a heart, back or neck condition, or for pregnant women. Tour operates subject to meeting a minimum number of participants.
