Take a leisurely guided walk through Vopnafjörður Village, unveiling the rich tapestry of the area’s past and present. Tales of Viking settlements, ancient sagas and a peek into current Icelandic culture are all set against the backdrop of stunning fjord landscapes.
The village is built on a hill, so throughout your tour you’ll stroll up and down some short slopes. Along the way, learn about today´s life in this little, remote community of approximately 650 people as well as in the olden days. Vopnafjörður used to be a trading center for the North East part of Iceland. Trading ships from Denmark came to Vopnafjörður with merchandise to sell to the Icelanders that lived in the area.
On the tour, explore old abandoned houses and listen to stories linked to them as well as folklore tales about the village that your local guide wishes to share with you. You’ll also find out where the first settlement in the village was and visit the church of Vopnafjörður.
Finally, stop for Icelandic refreshments before returning to the pier.
Please note: The tour runs mostly on pavements but also on grass or gravel paths. Please wear good walking shoes, and proper protective clothing as the weather in Iceland is quite unpredictable.
