Tromsø is the capital of northern Norway, with 52,000 inhabitants, and has charmingly preserved its old buildings. In fact, it was once Norway's national capital for a grand total of 38 days!
A panoramic drive brings you to the Tromsø Museum -- the largest museum and research institute in northern Norway, with exhibits on geology, botany, zoology, archaeology, modern cultural history and Sami ethnography.
You'll also step inside the Tromsdalen Church -- the Arctic Cathedral -- on the mainland. The church boasts Europe's largest stained-glass window (1,500 square feet), depicting the return of Christ.
Tromsø Island is linked to the mainland by the 3,398-foot Tromsø Bridge. Ride the cable car up Mt Storsteinen for a beautiful view of Tromsø Island surrounded by the sea and jagged mountains.
Please note: It is recommended to dress in layered clothing and wear comfortable walking shoes.
