The island of Bressay shelters Lerwick, the capital of Shetland, and can be reached by ferry in under 10 minutes.
A truly unique opportunity to join islander, archaeologist, and farmer Chris Dyer from Garths Croft Bressay on an exclusive exploration through 6000 years of history on the island of Bressay. Chris is also a native and heritage breed crofter, raising traditional native Shetland sheep with a huge array of traditional colorings and markings alongside sustainable produce, horticulture, and woodland enterprises. There will be an opportunity to visit Chris’s home and farm, meet the animals and engage with traditional island life, alongside an array of short circular walks discovering spectacular natural heritage and historical sites with his professional guiding.
We will visit Noss Sound on the wild east side of Bressay, a tapestry of human history within the beautiful environs of a National Nature Reserve and a chance to discover a 2500-year-old Iron Age broch, Viking longhouse and deserted medieval village.
The tour will also explore the landscape adjacent to the mid-Victorian Bressay lighthouse and dramatic sandstone cliffs, guarding the southern approaches to Lerwick harbor. If time permits, we will also visit the sheltered bay of Culliesbrough with an opportunity to see otters and cetaceans alongside the site of a Pictish symbol stone and a twelfth century early Christian chapel.
All this will be combined with the opportunity to visit the Speldiburn community hub for a warm welcome and excellent homemade refreshments.
