From Holy Loch, you'll travel northeast along Loch Eck to Strachur and along the shores of Loch Fyne. Pass through the Argyll Forest National Park to reach the Rest & Be Thankful mountain pass -- originally a military route constructed in 1744. The spectacular views from here readily explain the origin of its name. The descent to Loch Lomond takes you along the length of its western shore.
Loch Lomond is the romantic centerpiece of the National Park and is the largest expanse of freshwater in Great Britain. Step aboard a local boat for a one-hour cruise around the loch. Breathtaking views include a backdrop of Ben Lomond -- the southernmost of the Munros (mountains taller than 3,000 feet). In Scotland, the Munros are deemed a paradise for walkers. Much has been written about Loch Lomond, both in song and verse.
Your cruise on this picturesque body of water takes you past six of Scotland's most elegant Victorian homes. These were built on the banks of the loch by rich Glaswegian merchants. Viewing Inchmurrin -- the largest of the 60 isles of Loch Lomond -- you will learn that the legacy of the island's occupation is still evident in the ruins of the 7th-century monastery and Lennox Castle. Nowadays, the isle is home to only ten residents and a few farm animals. Former illustrious visitors include Saint Mirren (for whom the island is named), Robert the Bruce, King James VI of Scotland, and Mary, Queen of Scots. The return journey, along the loch shores and beneath the mountain peaks, takes you back to the ship at Holy Loch.
