Live out your dream of being at one with the countryside on this visit to Glenshane Farm, reached via one of the highest mountain roads in Northern Ireland. This working sheep farm is owned by Jamese McCloy -- a fourth-generation farmer who is passionate about preserving the epic landscape around him. Jamese delights in farming the fields he has lived and loved since he was a child.
His goal for your visit is to offer you the warmest possible welcome. You'll spend time out in the fields and fresh air, helping Jamese to herd the sheep. Learn how to issue instructions to his talented working dogs and relish the views of Slieve Gallion, the Mournes and Slemish Mountain, where Saint Patrick shepherded as a young man.
Take a break for some storytelling and a hearty lunch at Friel's Bar & Restaurant, established in 1835. This award-winning establishment is nestled in the heart of the South Derry countryside in the picturesque village of Swatragh. Throughout the 1800s, it was a coaching inn, a hotel, and a Post Office. It also served as a dispensary and surgery, and during the Great Famine of the 1840s, it was a soup kitchen.
Take a guided walk along the Famine mural to explore this dark chapter of history and learn about some local characters, past and present.
