Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum & Torre Annunziata UNESCO World Heritage Site
"When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August AD 79, it engulfed the two flourishing Roman towns of Pompei and Herculaneum, as well as the many wealthy villas in the area. These have been progressively excavated and made accessible to the public since the mid-18th century. The vast expanse of the commercial town of Pompei contrasts with the smaller but better-preserved remains of the holiday resort of Herculaneum, while the superb wall paintings of the Villa Oplontis at Torre Annunziata give a vivid impression of the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the wealthier citizens of the Early Roman Empire." Seabourn is the official cruise partner of UNESCO World Heritage.
The impressive remains of the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum and their associated villas, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, and progressively excavated since, provide a complete and vivid picture of daily life at a specific moment in the past that is without parallel anywhere in the world.
On this memorable visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site ruins of Herculaneum, you will discover life as it was just prior to the monumental eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. A 1.5-hour drive brings you to the ruins, where you will begin your guided walking tour.
Herculaneum was entombed by a flood of mud that left the city virtually intact. You will see the marble floors, mosaics, paintings, and carbonized woods found in excellent condition once they were unearthed. Explore the quiet streets of this ancient city as you learn what life was like for its residents. Sights seen may include a wine merchant's store with its storage jars still lined up, the bakery and the town's many beautiful homes. Herculaneum provides a vivid impression of life during the first century.
Reboard the coach for the 1.5-hour drive back to Sorrento and visit a woodcraft center.
Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore on their own are welcome to do so but must return to the ship on their own.
Please note: Tour requires extensive walking over uneven surfaces; not suitable for guests with mobility limitations or for guests using a wheelchair. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
