"Wine has been produced by traditional landholders in the Alto Douro region for some 2,000 years. Since the 18th century, its main product, port wine, has been world famous for its quality. This long tradition of viticulture has produced a cultural landscape of outstanding beauty that reflects its technological, social and economic evolution."
Visit Alto Douro Wine Region. Your first stop is at the charming, mountain town of Amarante. This ancient settlement boasts some fine Romanesque architecture.
You'll step inside the São Goncalo Church and see the town's lovely Roman Bridge. Continue to Peso da Regua for a guided tour of the Quinta da Pacheca Winery. The estate is one of the best-known wineries in the Douro Valley and dates to the 1700s. The original vines belonged to an order of monks for centuries before that.
Then enjoy a tasting of some award-winning wines, along with a buffet lunch before returning to the pier.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Travel time to the Douro Valley is approximately two hours each way. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
