Volcanic Milos is the westernmost of the Cyclades islands, boasting stunning beaches, coves and geological formations. Since antiquity, the island has been quarried for its minerals and obsidian. Milos is often called "nature's geological lab," and so this tour provides opportunities to photograph the island's unusual landscapes.
You'll visit the incredible Sarakiniko Beach, with its lunar landscape and outcropping of volcanic lava.
You'll also see the Neolithic town of Filakopi and the Caves of Papafragas from an excellent vantage point. These caves served as hideouts for pirates in Byzantine times.
Then, visit Plaka. This picturesque capital of the island, perched 820 feet above sea level, offers breathtaking views of the island. Stroll along the narrow streets and maybe enjoy a coffee (at your own expense) at one of the many local cafés.
Before returning to the ship, you'll see where the ancient Greek Venus de Milo statue was discovered in 1820. Watch for the Roman Theatre, and your guide will discuss the early Christian catacombs on the island.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
