Pont du Gard (Roman Aqueduct)
"The Pont du Gard was built shortly before the Christian era to allow the aqueduct of Nîmes (which is almost 50 km long) to cross the Gard river. The Roman architects and hydraulic engineers who designed this bridge, which stands almost 50 m high and is on three levels -- the longest measuring 275 m -- created a technical as well as an artistic masterpiece."
Travel back in time and immerse yourself in the Provence of yesteryear.
First up, you will uncover the ingenuity and the handiwork of the Romans. The world-famous ancient Roman Pont du Gard aqueduct crosses the shallow Gard Rive. This amazing feat of engineering used to carry around 44 million gallons of water a day from Uzes, along a 30-mile route to the fountains, baths and homes of the citizens of Nîmes. Built around AD 40, it features three impressive levels of arcades that are recessed one on top of the other, reaching an overall height of 160 feet. You will climb up to a private platform at the third level of the aqueduct. From here, you can see and appreciate the inside of the water channel, admire the construction out of limestone, and take in the panorama below. From the top level, you'll view the landscape and centuries of history that stretch out before you. Back at the base of the aqueduct, see the bridge from another angle and check out the fabulous work of the Roman architects and hydraulic engineers who designed it -- a technical and artistic masterpiece.
In a private area, you'll have an opportunity to taste different wines, including Roman-style wines, made the old-fashioned way, accompanied by a snack of cheese, bread and tapenade.
You'll have some free time to wander about the site and to purchase lunch (at your own expense).
