Discover an incredibly interesting part of the history and culture of Spain -- Cartagena's underwater heritage.
Take a panoramic drive through the mining area on the outskirts of Cartagena -- an impressive landscape where the lead and silver have been extracted since Carthaginian and Roman times.
As you reach the Cabo de Palos area, your knowledgeable guide will explain the underwater heritage here and why the cape is considered one of the most dangerous areas for navigation on the Spanish coast. It happens to be one of the largest ship graveyards in Europe.
Many archaeological underwater sites have been excavated over the past 20 years. The treasures they yielded are on display at the National Museum of Spain in Cartagena. View some of the oldest wood wreckage recovered from the seabed, including a Phoenician ship from 7th century BC, as well as coinage recovered from a Spanish frigate resting at more than 3,600 feet below sea level. Silver and lead coins are just a fraction of part the enormous treasure on display at the museum, along with many other interesting artifacts from Roman, Greek, and medieval shipwrecks.
Please note: The Underwater Museum is closed on Mondays.
