The inland town of Guadalest is a fascinating example of an Islamic fortified town, closely resembling today how it looked when it was occupied by the Moors hundreds of years ago.
The oldest part of town can be reached only on foot; you'll access it through a tunnel cut into the rock. From the main square, climb a flight of 150 steps, which leads via quaint cobblestone streets up to the top of a rocky spire.
Enter the hilltop San José Castle -- an 11th-century Gothic fortress, now in ruins. Within its walls, you will visit the Orduña House, the church, museum, prison and library.
Enjoy a tasting of local products in a nearby shop.
The Guadalest Ethnological Museum was created to showcase the life and times of this remarkable town. It is built on the rock that constitutes the Old Town within the fortress of Arab origin. Don't miss the ancient door of gargantuan proportions.
You will have free time to purchase lunch (at your own expense) and stroll through the village. The shops stock local handicrafts as well as diverse articles from all over the world.
Please note: The road to the fortified town is steep and winding. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Terrain includes cobblestones and more than 150 steps to reach the top of the village. There is no elevator; however, participants can choose to remain at the bottom of the stairs.
