The colonial town of St. Pierre, once known as the "Little Paris of the Caribbean," earned its name from successful earnings in the sugar and rum trades. Through your walking tour, you’ll be amazed by the blend of rich culture, captivating architecture and the haunting volcanic history, where ruins of the once-vibrant city tell a vibrant story. In the end, you’ll be mesmerized and may never want to leave.
First and foremost, St. Pierre draws its identity, beauty, and strength from its history. The eruption of Mount Pelee was a catastrophic event in 1902, when the volcano unleashed its deadly fury, obliterating the entire city and leaving a haunting reminder of the forces of nature.
On your walking tour of St. Pierre, you will see sights such as Place Bertin, the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce. You’ll also stop at the Figuier ruins, where the remnants of buildings, vehicles, and everyday life stand frozen in time. Pass by the theater, 1902 Memorial, Sand & Ash shop, and the Cathedral too.
Before returning to the pier, you will have time to enjoy a cocktail at a local establishment.
