First and foremost, St Pierre draws its identity, beauty, and strength from its history. The eruption of Mount Pelee in 1902 obliterated the entire city and left a haunting reminder of the forces of nature.
Today, the colonial town offers a blend of rich culture, captivating architecture, and haunting volcanic history. The ruins of this once-vibrant city tell a compelling story.
Today's walking tour includes sights such as Place Bertin, the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce and the Figuier ruins, where the remnants of buildings, vehicles, and everyday life stand frozen in time. Pass the theater, the 1902 Memorial, the Sand & Ash shop, and the cathedral. It's easy to see why St Pierre was once known as the Paris of the Caribbean, with an unusual degree of prosperity from the sugar and rum trades.
Before returning to the pier, enjoy a cocktail at a local establishment.
