Set out on a panoramic drive into the lush landscape of El Yunque. This 3,500-foot peak lies within Puerto Rico's Caribbean National Forest. Its rainforest covers 28,000 acres, contains 75% of the virgin forest remaining in Puerto Rico, and is a bird sanctuary. It's also the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System.
Receiving 100 billion gallons of rain per year, the forest can sustain some 250 tree species, 50 types of fern, and as many as 20 varieties of wild orchid. El Yunque is also home to an array of Puerto Rican wildlife.
Pause at a local bakery for a café con leche or hot chocolate with a quesito (cheese pastry).
Then, head into the rainforest and visit El Portal, the recently renovated Visitor Center, offering a rare view of the Puerto Rican parrot, currently an endangered species. El Portal is, as the name implies, a gateway to knowledge about tropical forests in general and El Yunque in particular. At El Portal, you will gain a better understanding of the needs and complexities of tropical forests and the practices required for their sound management and preservation. Your driver/guide will lead you on a short interpretative nature walk along a trail at the center.
Yokahu Tower offers a commanding view of the entire northeast coast of Puerto Rico; you'll also pause at beautiful Coca Falls.
Please note: Tour sequence may vary. The rainforest area is still undergoing renovations and reconstructions; certain stops may occasionally be omitted without notice. Guests should wear comfortable walking shoes. It is recommended to bring a poncho or umbrella in case of rain.
