This 45-minute aerial sightseeing adventure allows you to witness the devastation wrought by an active volcano from an air-conditioned helicopter. This pilot-narrated tour and a tasteful instrumental soundtrack keep you engaged in the journey.
Skim across the sparkling turquoise waters to the magnificent island of Montserrat and ascend over lush, untouched hills, and Montserrat's "Exclusion Zone" -- a volcanic area designated off-limits that few ever get to see. At its center is the awe-inspiring Soufrière Hills Volcano, which frequently vents a combination of ash, smoke, and steam. Rising to an impressive 3,000 feet and dominating the island, the volcano towers above the Tar River Gorge and delta -- a reminder of the flows that have surged beneath. In 1997, the volcano erupted and left two-thirds of the island uninhabitable. Fly over a clutch of evacuated villages, the previous location of the W.H. Bramble Airport, and the charred remains of the former capital, Plymouth -- now partially buried under 40 feet of ash.
Watch for sea life on your flight back to Antigua. Sea turtles are most common, but magnificent humpback and sperm whale sightings are also possible.
The helicopter has raised, stadium-style seating and no rear-facing seats or partitions to block your view.
Please note: Total flight time is around 45 minutes. Maximum weight is 280 lbs. Maximum height is 7 feet. BOSE noise-cancelling headsets are provided. Bring government-issued photo ID. Children up to and including the day prior to their second birthday can be added (at no cost) to the parent's weight if seated on the parent's lap (maximum weight remains at 280 lbs); each child aged 2 years or older is required by the FAA to occupy a paid seat. Lap children cannot occupy front-row seats.
