Havre-Aubert is a small hamlet located on the southern end of the archipelago of Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine. A member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Québec, this little beauty is well worth a visit. Acadians (descendants of 17th-century French colonists) first settled these islands and their influence still can be seen today in the architecture of the fishing huts, boutiques, and the courthouse. is a small hamlet located on the southern end of the archipelago of Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine. Visit the Fumoir d'Antan Museum -- a typical smokehouse that showcases what was once an important industry in the region. Sample smoked herring and learn about the care and local passion for preparing perfectly smoked and dried savory seafood. Herring, mackerel, salmon, and scallops have been produced here for more than three generations.
At Le Site d'Autrefois, you'll learn about the fishermen's traditional lifestyle. Madelinot fisherman Claude Bourgeois leads your experience here. Claude lost his boat and his career in a shipwreck; since then, he has dedicated himself to sharing traditional stories, knowledge, and songs in an effort to keep this aspect of Madelinot culture alive.
Havre-Aubert's most popular attraction is perhaps the Historical Site at La Grave. Traditional architecture is on display at the beach -- a favorite spot for fishing, commerce and meeting with a special maritime flavor.
The one-of-a-kind Atelier Cotier is where sand from the islands is transformed into sculptures encapsulating the beauty of the sea. The Art from the Sea Gallery offers works by local and off-island artists -- gorgeous souvenirs for the discerning. These establishments jointly form part of Canada's Visual Arts & Handicrafts Circuit.
Please note: Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; transportation may be more basic than in other ports (school bus or similar). Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair.
