Board a non-air-conditioned coach and head to the Sultan's Palace. A truly colorful welcome awaits you -- the ritual ceremony of Joko Kaha, illustrating the greatness of the Sultan of Ternate. This is a fascinating start to your day. Take in the splendor of the palace itself as well.
Batu Angus, the foothills of Mt Gamalama, are comprised of solid black rock cooled from molten lava that flowed from Mt Gamalama. The volcano last erupted in 1673, and its seaside location offers amazing views of the ocean, dotted with nearby islands.
Finally, you will visit Tolucco Fortress -- a Portuguese colonial relic that was built in 1540. Fort Tolukko is located in the village of Duga Duga on the edge of Ternate City. Its purpose was to control part of the spice route as, prior to the 18th century, cloves were only found in the Maluku Islands.
Please note:
Wear sturdy walking shoes.
