Baubau is a city on Buton Island in southeast Sulawesi province. The island's natural beauty and historical importance make it significant. This part of Indonesia has been shaped by indigenous, Islamic, and Dutch colonial influences, creating an eclectic culture here.
A traditional dance welcomes you to Baubau, and you will wander through the bustling marketplace where the local people buy and sell their daily essentials.
Experience life in a fisherman's village, where local women skilfully craft beautiful ikat weavings or fishing nets while their husbands venture out to sea for their catch.
The Buton Palace Fortress is a circular fortress with a circumference of 2,740 meters. It was built in the late 16th century. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Buton Palace is the largest castle in the world, with an area of almost 58,000 acres. Explore a small part of the fortress, offering an insight into local culture as you sit cross-legged on the floor (alternative seating is not available) to enjoy local food and watch cultural dances.
