Explore Kodiak's scenic beauty and wartime history with extended time for a pretty hike through a portion of 183-acre Fort Abercrombie State Park.
Depart the pier for the drive to Park Headquarters. You'll have 1.5 hours of free, unguided time to hike along well-maintained natural and gravel trails offering stunning views. A variety of seabirds inhabit the park's coastline, and whales are often sighted here.
Watch for World War II bunkers -- remnants of Kodiak's wartime past and a reminder of its strategic location. The Pacific Barrier component of the DEW Line system ran from Midway to Kodiak.
At the appointed time, reboard the bus back at Park Headquarters for the drive back to the pier.
Please note: Terrain includes a trail leading through forested areas with moderate inclines and a staircase of 68 steps. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Transportation to Fort Abercrombie State Park is provided; then, you have free time to explore the trails on your own. Not advisable for guests with a heart, respiratory or back condition. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Dress warmly in layered clothing with gloves, a scarf, and a hat; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
