Meet your local captain and board a boat at the pier to set off on your 1.5 hour journey to see the magnificent icebergs, laying at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord. These icebergs come from one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world, Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier, moving around 130ft per day. The size of 66,000 football fields, the glacier is responsible for creating 10% of the icebergs in Greenland.
When you reach the icebergs, your captain will navigate through the ice, bringing you as close as safely possible, so you will have plenty of time to take pictures of these enormous chunks of ice, some being as tall as skyscrapers! A little cold on deck? Enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea while marveling at the incredible scenery surrounding you.
Please note:
It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen. There are steps to negotiate when (dis)embarking the boat, with assistance offered. Tour generally operates rain or shine but may be canceled in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. The level of guide experience varies in this region due the remoteness of its location. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
