Set out on foot for a self-guided exploration of the town of Ilulissat. The town was once called the "Town of 10,000 Souls" from when it had more sled dogs than people. Ilulissat, the Greenlandic word for icebergs, lays 69°N of the Arctic Circle and is best known for its surroundings of majestic icebergs, calving from the Kangia Glacier.
During your exploration, pass by various sites such as the 18th century Zion’s Church, the Art Workshop, where local artists make and sell their wares and the birth home and bust of Knud Rasmussen, well known polar explorer and anthropologist born in Ilulissat. Vist the Ilulissat Town Museum. Once inside you will discover the story of polar expeditions, nature and culture of the region and local history through photographs, films and artifacts.
You can also visit the Ilulissat Art Museum. Housed inside the old colony governor’s residence, explore the permanent exhibition of Danish painter Emanuel A. Petersen’s work as well as rotating exhibitions featuring Greenlandic and international artists which transitions about 4 times a year.
Local guides will be stationed in midtown and will remain available for directions and information. Head back to the pier at your leisure or feel free to stay in town to shop or return to either museum to explore further before returning to the ship.
