Exploring Ghana’s Coastal Heritage: Cape Coast & Elmina Castles
Drive from Takoradi to a typical fishing village, where you’ll meet the chief and elders. Immerse yourself in the community, witnessing daily trades such as the processing of gari, a West African staple made from cassava. Additionally, discover the ancient art of smoking fish using traditional Chorkor smokers. Step inside the local community school, where students will greet and entertain you.
At Cape Coast Castle, your guide will lead you through its haunting history. Built by the Swedes in 1652 and later taken over by the British, this fortress played a pivotal role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Explore the slave quarters and Palaver Hall, where lives were bought and sold. Don’t miss the West African Historical Museum within the castle, housing artifacts from the past.
Visit Elmina Castle, originally constructed by the Portuguese. This historic site was later used for slave auctions. Wander through its dungeons and cells, where enslaved individuals once suffered. Capture photos of the castle’s distinctive architecture and enjoy panoramic views of the fishing harbor and old township.
Recharge with a delicious lunch at Coconut Grove Beach Resort, overlooking the serene coastline.
Finally, settle in for a 90-minute drive back to port, reflecting on the profound stories and resilience of the human spirit you’ve encountered during this unforgettable tour.
